Bump map

What a bump map is:

Bump maps are often described as maps that allow you add intricate details easily to textures, as its name suggests - adding all those little 'bumps' to objects that would otherwise take hours of painstaking modelling.

However, this isn't exactly true. Bump maps actually control the way light is reflected on objects.  It simulates detail on objects by artificially redirecting light rays as they would if the geometric deformation existed.

It tweaks or perturbs the normal based on the information in a bump map - usually a greyscale map where lighter colors signify the bump intensity.

Here are some other online tutorials i have looked at.

How to bump map:

Uses:
To create fine details and highlighted points on a model which improve the realism and aesthetic look of them.
It is a good way to add more detail, dents and hollows without adding more pollys, Adding more detail in a low poly model, Good for games where lots is going on at one time.

Bend Modifier.

The bend modifier is found in the modifer list when the object has been turned into a Editable poly.
The uses for this tool are limited but its results are faster then the other methods of achieving the same thing.
The bend modifier bends a selected section without the need for more Vertex's. How ever adding more vertex will add greater

This tool requires a bit of fiddling with to get the results you want as sometimes if you have the wrong selection tool up it will deform an object.

The use i found for this tool was during a tutorial where we made a basic lam post, and used the bend modifier to get a curv just before the head.

Quick skirting board with , Glossy effects

First i created a box which was made with 4x4x4
This allowed made it easy to work with the shape.

I selected the the 2nd line and the  4th line from the button holding Ctrl while clicking so it kept them selected.
I then extrude , just adding reasonable amount  to the extrusion
Then on top add a bevel which will give it a slight  curve ,
Press shift and q just to check if it has been added and have a quick look.
Then go into material . Press M  and  select and empty default sphere which will allow you to add a texture.

go into  get materials, Click bit map  and find a texture you want , this one was a wooden texture.

click "put material in scene".  If this hasn't worked make sure your object is selected.

it should be textured. Alt Q to see it finished agian.

Now go into Create and then Lights , bring down the drop box and then put in a omni light ,

Shift Q

this will make a  lighting effect and , add some shadows.

Applying textures.

Video tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNaXrWcbQfw

By pressing M, you can go into Material editor
It should come up with multiple sphere spared objects, If it does not click the Modes menu at the top left and click Compact Material Editor. You should now how multiple spheres on screen and some box's with values inside.
Click get material this is a small icon under the spheres, The one furthest left and has a Arrow pointing to a checker sphere.
Locate the texture you want and open it.
this texture should take up a space where the sphere was .
To apply this texture to an object click. Assign material to selection. This is a checked symbol a drop down arrow and a green box.

This is the most basic way of adding textures some more advanced ways of adding textures would be using things like:

  • Bit maps
  • Opacity
  • Bump maps
Tutorials online are very easy to find and extremely useful to know about

Idea For Street

Apocalyptic set:
Decaying buildings. Wreckages, burning bins. Skeletons, dusty desert, tumble weeds
Games such as Fallout will show scenery like i mean and also films like the mad Max franchise.

Nature set:
Growth of tree's on buildings, mossy textures. Vines, Cracks,  abandoned buildings.
Much like the scenery in the New lost planet2 and  the film I Am Legend.

Ancient set with nature features:
This is the set I decided on , It will have elaborate designed buildings and features which will set the scene, I want to make at least 1 maybe 2 feature pieces which capture the person viewing's attendion. While all this is going on i would like to incorporate the nature idea into this.

My mind map will help show what I mean

Examples/Inspiration for my street

The following images are things which kind of get across what i would like to see in my own street. The first one has the things in common with the design i have in mind. but it does not get across the wild style i would like to show through mine.
It also has architecture that i like.

This image is a good example as the vines and greenery are growing all over the building. This is good inspiration for me, when it comes to deciding how my main buildings will look.

The images underneath show photos i would of used for references when i wanted to create the Apocalyptic scene.

Basic Street Objects

Lamp

Bin

Rubbish

Telephone box

Posters

rubble

cars

Sky

Drains

House

This is the starting image . We where tasked to Correct its , and edit out parts so it would be suitable for a texture and seen as a clean image .

Firstly we used things like the ruler  just to identify areas which where out of perspective , which would allow us to see things that needed to be changed like the windows sills levels and the doors and pavement.  This would be extremely hand when it comes  manipulating an image as it gives us something to base the building on and makes sure we keep every thing even. The way that I used to re form the building to it could be a bit more even was too use transform and skew, which ment the image could be bended twisted and reformed but keep its composure

By using tools such as the , pen tool . Healing brush tool and stamp tool. This allowed the image to easily be manipulated.  Using things like the stamp tool and healing brush was useful to patch up small defections which did not suit my ideal image , while the pen tool was extremely useful to grab large sections and apply  Content aware fill.

Example of some changes .

This will come in handy later when looking for textures or just for photo manipulation being able to clean up an image cleanly and fast , so no time will be wasted .  Also the ending results are quite natural looking and  the changes that can be made are quite limitless, as with these techniques you could add more windows form another building or so.

Google maps

We used Google maps to get some images of streets with street view. which would be useful for references. and also texture hunting .
This would be handy later on in the project when we ave to design a street.
And will also be an effective way to get textures and  quick references if you know where too look or where you want , and could also leed to happy accidents stumbling on things which will come in hand y for later
These could be helpful  to get a good perspective.

Brick wall

1. Pick 2 colours for foreground and back ground , Contrasting or Stone like ( i picked a light and dark gray)

2. Go to Filter > Render Clouds

3.Add Noise  3%

4.Channels , Add channel

5.  Filter > Difference Cloud

6. Add Noise 3%

Back to layer

make sure the layer is unlocked
7. Filter > Render > Add lightning effect.

You should end up with something like this.

Create a new layer and add the stone/brick  you just made onto it.
Duplicate and edit so theirs a line of different looking bricks.

ways you can do this, is by playing with the properties , and changing the lights and brightness.

This process would be a helpful for future use , when i need to produce quick hard  surfaces which will be handy , because of a future project which will requite us to create a 3d model street

Street View

Today we where tasked with taking as many pictures as we could to assist us with 3d modelling a street view.
We took images of textures on walls , floors, windows, perspectives and

These images show perspective's which all interested me ,  and would be useful to help piece  together

Crate a box

go into modify and select editable poly
go into the sub object menu and select inset tool
make sure the faces are selected on the
  • Select Object
Selects objects, highlighting them
  • Select by name
Sorts items by name making  it easy to select different objects via name , useful when their are lots of objects
  • Rectangular selection tool
Creates a box which will select anything within it
  • circular"
Creates a circular selection, selects anything within
  • fence"
  • lasso"
  • paint"
  • window crossing
toggles between being able to select an object by it being slightly within  selection, and being fully within selection.
  • select and move
Creates a X,Y,Z axis which lets you move the object
  • select and rotate
Creates a similar thing as the " Select and move" this rotates the objects in multiple directions

  • Select and uniform scale

Squashes and manipulates the form of the object
